6 Tidio Alternatives for Small Service Businesses (2026)

A 3D clay-style tradesperson in a blue cap and overalls at a round counter, comparing a row of tiny laptops that each show a chat bubble, with the one in front glowing green.

Tidio is one of the best-known chat tools for small websites, and plenty of businesses are happy with it. But if you run a service business (a plumber, an electrician, a salon, a cleaning company) you might find you're paying for features built for online shops, and paying extra every time the AI answers a customer.

This guide compares six Tidio alternatives, with prices checked on 3 November 2026. We make one of them, KipDesk, and we've tried to be fair: each tool below is the right pick for someone.

What to compare

Before the list, the four things that matter most for a small service business:

  1. What the AI costs once you're busy. Many tools charge per AI conversation or per "resolution", on top of a monthly plan. A cheap plan can get expensive quickly.
  2. Where the answers come from. You want answers from your own prices, areas and hours, not the AI's guess at what a "typical" plumber charges. More on this in Will an AI chatbot make up prices?
  3. What happens to leads. A chat that ends without a name and phone number is a missed job. The tool should ask for details and send them to you straight away.
  4. How long setup takes. If it takes a weekend of building flows, it won't get done.

Tidio's pricing, for comparison

Tidio's AI agent, Lyro, is an add-on. On monthly billing it starts at $39 a month for 50 AI conversations, and costs $140 for 200, on top of a plan such as Starter at $29 a month. Every account gets 50 AI conversations free, once. So a small business with 200 AI conversations a month pays around $169 a month. We've put the full breakdown on our KipDesk vs Tidio page.

1. KipDesk

Best for: trades, salons, cleaners and local services that want questions answered and leads emailed to them.

KipDesk reads your website and drafts your key facts (services, prices, hours, areas). You approve them, and the assistant answers only from what you approved, your answers, your files and your website, showing the source under each answer. When it doesn't know, it says so, takes the visitor's details and adds the question to your list to answer once.

  • Price: from $19 a month, with 500 conversations and the AI included. Pro is $29 for 1,000; Business is $39 for 2,000.
  • If you get busy: you're never charged extra. It keeps taking every visitor's details until next month or you upgrade.
  • Leads: emailed to you straight away, with the whole chat.
  • Also: live chat when a visitor asks for a person, a WordPress plugin with one-click connect, replies in the visitor's language.
  • Trade-offs: website chat only (no Messenger or Instagram inbox), no phone app (it works in your phone's browser), and a 7-day free trial rather than a free plan.

2. tawk.to

Best for: anyone who wants free live chat and will answer chats themselves.

tawk.to's core live chat is free, with no limit on agents or chats. That's hard to beat if you or your team will be there to reply.

  • Price: free. AI Assist is an add-on from $29 a month (there's a free tier for low chat volume), and removing the "Powered by tawk.to" branding is $29 a month.
  • Trade-offs: the free product is built around people answering. The AI is an add-on, and getting it to answer well from your own information takes more setup.

3. Crisp

Best for: small teams that want a shared inbox for website chat, email and social messages.

Crisp is a tidy, well-made customer messaging tool with a free plan and paid plans per workspace rather than per person.

  • Price: free plan with 2 seats (no AI). Mini is $45 a month with about 90 automated conversations; Essentials is $95 a month with about 450.
  • Trade-offs: the AI allowance is counted in credits, so busier sites move up plans. It's more of a team inbox than a lead-capture tool.

4. Intercom

Best for: software companies and growing support teams.

Intercom's AI agent, Fin, is one of the strongest available, and Intercom's help desk is very complete.

  • Price: seats from $29 a month on Essential (with a discount for new customers), plus Fin at $0.99 per outcome. 14-day free trial.
  • Trade-offs: per-seat plus per-outcome pricing adds up, and it's more than most local businesses need.

5. LiveChat

Best for: businesses with people on hand to answer chats during the day.

LiveChat is a polished live chat tool with AI help for your team built in.

  • Price: Essential is $25 per person a month on monthly billing ($19 on yearly), with 10 AI resolutions a month. Extra AI resolutions are $49.50 for 50. 14-day free trial.
  • Trade-offs: priced per person, and the AI allowance on the starter plan is small, so it suits teams who answer most chats themselves.

6. Chatbase

Best for: people who want to build a custom AI chatbot trained on their own content.

Chatbase lets you train an AI agent on your website, documents and FAQs, with lots of control over how it behaves.

  • Price: Hobby is $32 a month (billed yearly) with 700 message credits. Removing the Chatbase branding is a $99 a month add-on. No free plan, but there's a 7-day trial.
  • Trade-offs: it's a toolkit, so you set up more yourself. Credits are counted per message, not per conversation.

Which one should you choose?

  • You run a service business and want every enquiry turned into a lead: KipDesk is built for exactly that, with the AI included in the price.
  • You'll answer chats yourself and want it free: tawk.to.
  • You run an online shop: Tidio is still a strong choice.
  • You're a software company with a support team: Intercom.

Whatever you pick, test it the way a customer would: ask it your prices, an area you don't cover and something it can't know. The right tool answers the first, is honest about the second and takes the visitor's details on the third.
